Report: Sony mulled, rejected download-only console

Sony at one point considered, but ultimately rejected building the PS4 as a download-only console, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Sources ‘familiar with the matter’ shared that the company has opted to go with an optical disk drive model after the digital-based console concept was turned down.

The source claims Sony decided against a download-only model due to inconsistency in worldwide Internet connectivity, where the size of game files would make downloading titles nearly impossible in some regions.

WSJ’s sources also stated that Sony would be launching their next-gen effort sometime next year.
