Resident Evil 7 tops the UK charts

Capcom's Resident Evil 7 is the first new game to take the top spot in 2017. Resident Evil 7 has the third best Week One for the series to date; the record holder is 2009’s Resident Evil 5, assisted by it being the franchise’s debut on the Xbox 360.

In recent years, survival horror games - even critically acclaimed ones like 2014’s The Evil Within and Alien Isolation – have struggled sales-wise. Resident Evil actually outperformed the debuts of both of those titles, though they launched in the busy October period versus the January release date of Capcom’s game, so a true comparison is difficult.

As well as Resident Evil 7, there are a number of new titles in the Top Ten this week. PS4-exclusive Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue debuted in third place, while Sega’s Yakuza 0 charted at No.8.

Despite a ten per cent rise in sales week-on-week, Grand Theft Auto V falls one place to No.2. Meanwhile, FIFA 17 charts at No.4, dropping two places to No.4 with an eight per cent sales increase.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare falls to fifth place with an eight per cent sales decline, while Rocket League held sixth place as sales rose 46 per cent week-on-week.

Just outside of the Top Ten at No.14 is Bandai Namco’s new RPG, Tales of Besteria.

These new releases helped software sales rise 46 per cent week-on-week, while revenue for the period rose 74 per cent.

GfK also notes that the brand new 500GB Glacier White edition of Sony's slim PS4 accounted for 'around a quarter' of PlayStation 4 units sold last week.

Below is the software Top Ten for the week ending January 28th:

1. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, Capcom
2. Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar
3. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter, Square Enix
4. FIFA 17, EA
5. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Activision
6. Rocket League, 505 Games
7. Battlefield 1, EA
8. Yakuza 0, Sega
9. Steep, Ubisoft
10. Mafia III, 2K Games
