Retailers cash in on £120m audio craze

The High Street could make in excess of £120m this year from the booming online game headset market.

This ultra-competitive sector lets stores get in on the increasingly important multiplayer segment. It is tipped to be the ultimate margin maker for upcoming hits Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.

High-end headsets can sell for as much as £179.99.

“The headphone market is worth over £120m per year,” Impact Global Solutions owner Angus Boyd told MCV. “There is lots of competition but also lots of demand.”

Even audio specialists from other fields are getting in on the act, with Sennheiser readying a range of gaming products this Q4.

“This exponential growth in online gamers has made the sector more lucrative to manufacturers,” said Dominic Feeney, Sennheiser’s UK consumer product manager. “Headsets used to only be for gamers with high-end PCs. Consoles have caught up and now online gaming is integral to the experience.”
