Sega goes mobile with iFone

Under the terms of the agreement, iFone will release eight of Sega’s titles in Europe, with the mobile specialist also working with Sega of America and Sega Corporation in the US and Japan.

Super Monkey Ball Mini-Golf will be the first title to hit mobiles in December, with the likes of Virtua Tennis, Sega Rally and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog set to follow throughout 2006.

“We are continually looking at ways to broaden our mass market fan base and what better way than to bring household brands like Sonic to so many mobile users?” said Sega UK MD Alan Pritchard.

“We have a huge catalogue of timeless IPs that are recognised throughout the world and we are delighted to be working closely with industry leaders iFone.”

Sega’s plans for the mobile market will be managed by Pritchard, with former O2, T-Mobile and 3 man Darren Newham, head of development for sport and mobile Andrew Brennand and producer Agostino Simonetta also working closely with iFone on the project.

iFone CEO Morgan O’Rahilly said of the deal: “This venture with Sega underlines our commitment to provide big-brand titles that appeal to a wide audience.”
