Sledgehammer reveals first COD details

The co-founder of new studio Sledgehammer Games has teased the first details about the developer’s upcoming debut foray into the Call of Duty franchise.

Speaking via Twitter, Glan Schofield stated: Three new employees started this week. We are growing fast but still make sure we maintain our high hiring standards. It’s a AAA team.

Working with military guys – their stories will blow you away. Names/locations will change but some situations going in the game- real stuff! Picking composers for the game. Fun stuff, think we found a great fit. Audio will be better than what we did on Dead Space.”

Concrete details for the game are thin on the ground. In March Activision said that the game will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre”. And after a bit of confusion about whether or not it will be an FPS, Sledgehammer’s homepage has finally confirmed that it will be.

The future roadmap for Call of Duty also remains a little muddy after the somewhat ambiguous statements issued by Activision in the wake of the Infinity Ward saga.

This November will see the release of Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, a high-action FPS very much in the vein of what fans of the series have become accustomed to.

We also know that Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty title is scheduled for 2011. Beyond that, though, things become less certain.

Now that the second map pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been released it’s not known exactly what Infinity Ward is working on. Presumably it’s Modern Warfare 3 – we do know that the developer was at some stage working on the title, but as to whether that’s still the case is anyone’s guess.

It’s also unclear whether Sledgehammer’s game will be the series’ sole release in 2011 or whether it will be joined by (the still unconfirmed) Modern Warfare 3.
