Software sales up in 2005

In terms of volume, ChartTrack data suggests that 61.3m units were sold in 2005, up by 2.6 per cent compared to 2004’s 59.7m. Value was up slightly from last year’s £1.350m.

The last week of the year was down on the previous week, as expected. But, significantly, the heavy discounting at retail post-Christmas had a major effect on the performance of individual formats, particularly PS2 and Xbox.

PS2 units were down 47 per cent in the week ending December 31st, with value down 39 per cent. PS2 Full Price bore the brunt of the fall, down 47 per cent by volume, while PS2 budget actually climbed two per cent.

And, according to ChartTrack, the effect on Xbox was even more pronounced, with sales in general falling by 18 per cent, Xbox Full Price down 51 per cent, but Xbox Budget up by 42 per cent.

Meanwhile, EA reclaimed the All Formats number one position with Need For Speed: Most Wanted, with the former top seller, Ubisoft’s King Kong, dropping to two.
