Square Enix suffers gaming losses

Square Enix has announced a mixed bag of results in its latest financial report, with the climb in net games sales being offset by a drop in both net and operating income.

Net sales for the period were down just 1.2 per cent at YEN 2.4bn, though net income dropped by nearly half from YEN 2.9bn last year to YEN 1.7bn. Operating losses, however, were down 82.8 per cent at YEN 594m – thanks in part to the recent Eidos acquisition.

Net game sales in isolation enjoyed a year-on-year rise of 7.2 per cent, jumping to YEN 8.5bn. Operating losses, though, hit YEN 992m – a stark contrast to the YEN 1.7bn profit seen in the same quarter of 2008.

The European market was the biggest offender for the publisher, suffering a 42 per cent year-on-year decline. North American sales were down 29.1 per cent, though Japanese sales crept up 5.3 per cent.

There was also growth in its mobile games division with sales up 1.2 per cent ay YEN 2.7bn. Operating revenues climbed 11.6 per cent to YEN 1.2bn.
