The world’s largest electronics manufacturing plant descended into chaos on Monday night as male workers rioted.
Foxconn’s Chengdu plant in Sichuan is the beating heart of many Western electronics products – including Xbox and Apple – but has hit the headlines in recent years due to accusations of poor working conditions and high suicide rates amongst its workers.
Want China Times reports that the trouble erupted after workers reacted angrily to two security guards attempted to apprehend a thief.
A number of employees reacted badly to the disruption and the situation soon escalated, resulting in up to one thousand workers throwing bins, bottles and fireworks from the upper floors of the building.
Local police were summoned, with the “hundreds” of officers on scene eventually arresting “dozens” of workers.
In all the disturbance lasted around two hours.
