Super Mario Bros Puzzle and Dragons spin-off tops Japanese charts

The cross-over between casual phenomenon Puzzle and Dragons and Nintendo’s Mario IP is, unsurprisingly, a chart-topping combination in Japan.

According to the latest data from Famitsu, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition for 3DS was the best-selling title in the Japanese retail rankings last week.

The game’s popularity helped propel Nintendo’s New 3DS XL handheld ahead of Sony’ PS4 in the hardware charts once again, following the latter’s recent success as the best-selling machine in the country.

Fellow 3DS casual title Style Savvy 3: KiraKira Code took second place, charting just ahead of continued success story Minecraft for PlayStation Vita.

Vita was the second-biggest-selling console last week, tracking less than 1,000 unit sales behind the New 3DS XL. It was followed closely by the PS4, with Wii U in fourth.

Further down the software Top Ten, former chart-topper Yokai Watch 2 and Nintendo titles Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Party 10, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros for 3DS all made reappearances in the rankings.
