Super Smash Bros 3DS to arrive ahead of Wii U

Super Smash Bros will launch this summer on 3DS and this winter on Wii U, Nintendo has announced.

Director Masahiro Sakurai broke the news of the staggered releases during this week's Nintendo Direct event, unveiling several other new details as well.

The Wii U and 3DS editions will boast improved multiplayer from the franchise's previous entry, Brawl – with Sakurai stressing that the 3DS won't be “overshadowed.” Both versions will carry two multiplayer modes for players to choose from: For Fun and For Glory.

The For Glory mode has players engaging exclusively in one-on-on battles on the franchise's classic Final Destination stage. The battle contains no items, and both wins and losses are recorded.

In For Fun mode, all stages but the Final Destination stage will be randomly selected from the game's available options. Only wins will be recorded and all items have a chance of appearing.

A temporary ban system will also be implemented to protect against various offensives, such as targeting an individual player or dropping out of matches mid-game.

A bevy of new roster confirmations were unveiled as well, including the return of Sheik, Yoshi and Zero Suit Samus. Pokemon Charizard and Greninja were also introduced as playable characters.

"New Super Smash Bros. games are a major event for video game fans everywhere, and present an experience that only Nintendo can offer," Moffitt, NoA's executive vice president of sales and marketing Scott Mofffitt said.

"Fans have two launches to look forward to this year, and they will want to get in plenty of practice with the Nintendo 3DS version so that they can be prepared for the launch of the Wii U game later in the year."
