Switch hits 1m sales in Japan after 17 weeks

After 17 weeks on shop shelves, the Nintendo Switch has finally hit one million sales in Japan, according to the latest figures from Famitsu.

That's not as fast as the Wii or 3DS, which took six and 13 weeks respectively to hit the same milestone, but it's certainly much quicker than the Wii U, which only lurched past one million sales after 34 weeks.

The news comes after another strong week from the platform holder's new fighting title Arms, which claimed its second week at No.1 in Japan's weekly software charts. Despite a fall of 73 per cent in sales, Arms shifted another 32,838 copies last week, taking its estimated cumulative total to just over 200,000 units.

Arms successfully fended up competition from a number of new releases last week, including FuRyu's 3DS title Alliance Alive, which debuted at No.2, and the PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, which entered the charts at No.3. Both titles sold just over 29,000 copies apiece.

However, the PS4 Complete Edition of Final Fantasy XIV also made it into the Top Ten last week, reaching No.7 with just over 6,000 units. Together with the Stormblood expansion, that means Final Fantasy XIV's combined sales were actually higher than Arms last week.

Elsewhere in the charts, Sony's VR shooter Farpoint also released in Japan last week, making it to No.5 after selling just shy of 10,000 units, and both the PS4 and Vita versions of Kadokawa Games' God Wars: Future Past claimed No.8 and No.9 respectively, shifting over 5,000 copies each.

Here's the Japan weekly software chart in full for the period ending June 25th:
