Take-Two wants pre-owned ‘participation’

Having kicked off its ‘participation’ in the pre-owned market via the inclusion of exclusive DLC for new buyers of Mafia II, publisher Take-Two has said that it will continue to explore ways in which it can generate revenue from second hand sales.

Speaking at the G7 Think Equity conference, as reported by CVG, CEO Ben Feder did not speak out against the second hand games sector, but did stress that Take-Two will be looking to monetise the sector beyond just games retail.

“For sure, we think the used game market is large,” he stated. “It's an interesting market and… we do believe that developers should participate in some way in the product they create, but it's a protected environment. Beyond that I don't have much more to comment.”

Feder added that the company will also be keeping an eye on the aftermath of a recent US court ruling that illegalised the pre-owned sales of a piece of design software on the PC.

“The used game market is protected by US law under the First Sale Doctrine,” he added. “I know there was some – not legislation – but additional news that came out over the last few days, but I think it's too early to tell what impact that will have.”
