Tesco’s 97p game shocker

Currently filling the bargain bins at Tesco stores across the nation are Xbox titles FIFA 2004 and World Championship Rugby, both for 97p. Atari’s PS2 title Enter the Matrix and PC titles Juiced and Pirates of the Caribbean are also on the shelves at a rock-bottom £5.84, while Konami’s PS2 title Pro Evolution Soccer 4 can be snapped up for £9.84.

And there’s plenty more PlayStation 2 releases on sale at £12.84, including recent titles Carol Vorderman’s Sudoku, Premier Manager 2006-2007, Sega Classics Collection and Simpsons Hit and Run.

It’s not just games either – Tesco is flogging current chart albums Alright, Still by Lily Allen and Inside In, Inside Out by The Kooks for under a fiver, and DVD movies like The Shawshank Redemption for £2.84.

The latest promotion will heighten fears of yet another Christmas of minimal margins and unprecedented price-slashing, in what is becoming an increasingly fierce entertainment sector. With traditional games retailers struggling to compete with Tesco’s huge buying power, it could be a long winter ahead for some rival stores.
