Ubisoft’s upcoming racer The Crew will allow gamers to pay for car upgrades using real-world cash.

The required currency used for such purchases can also be won in-game.

"We can confirm that performance parts can be unlocked through progression as well as microtransactions," a Ubisoft representative told Videogamer. "All content can be unlocked through progression, but for busy gamers who want to save some time, they will have the opportunity to buy some items in-game."

Creative director Julian Gerighty added: "Everything in the game has got this dual currency approach. We're not going to stop you from progressing [if you don't spend money] but it'll be more time."

Other recent console racers such as Gran Turismo 6 or Forza 5 have also used IAPs, although it was the latter that faced heavy criticism for the way in which it was implemented, forcing developer Turn 10 to apologise to fans.

Ubisoft this morning announced an autumn release date for The Crew.
