The good news iPad 2 sales near 1m

Sales of Apple’s iPad 2 came close to 1m units in the US over the tablet’s opening weekend, news agency Reuters is reporting.

The original iPad took 28 days to hit that sales barrier upon its launch in April 2010.

"Our field checks over the weekend indicate that the iPad 2 sold out at every Apple and non-Apple store we contacted," Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White stated.

"In fact, all the stores had worked through iPad 2 inventory by Saturday afternoon, and there were no new iPad 2 deliveries on Sunday."

However, in less positive news for Apple, one hacker is claiming to have already jailbroken the device, meaning that he’s able to run authorised code on it.

Though the speed of the crack seems quick, it’s actually very slow compared to recent Apple products. How much energy Apple invested into trying to make the iPad 2 more secure is unknown.

What’s interesting however are reports that some applications are displaying warning messages for users loading them onto a jailbroken device. If the device itself is aware, then perhaps Apple is too.

The iPad 2 arrives in the UK on March 25th.
