The REAL entertainment Top 40

You know that Entertainment Top 40 released last week and published online by the games press (including MCV)? Well it was wrong.

MCV can reveal that the video game numbers were based on the raw Chart-Track data and were not up-weighted to account for the whole market.

That means Black Ops didn’t outsell Modern Warfare 3 by almost half a million units and FIFA 11 didn’t outsell FIFA 12.

And there weren’t just seven video games in the Top 40, there would have been eight as Rockstar’s L.A. Noire would have made the chart.

In fact, if you include the up-weighted numbers, Battlefield would not have come eleventh but ninth, Zumba Fitness would rise from No.16 to No.11, while Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would have made 14th.

Just Dance 3 was listed by ERA as the 30th biggest seller, when in fact it was the 23rd biggest entertainment product and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations would have moved up a place from 32nd to 31st place.

However, Adele’s 21 would still have been the biggest selling entertainment product.

Modern Warfare 3 actually sold 3,127,343 units last year. That’s still a little down (-4%) on 2010’s Black Ops, but the difference is 139,000 units not 452,000 games as stated previously.

Meanwhile, FIFA 12 sold 2,437,002 units last year, 50,000 more copies than what FIFA 11 managed during the same period in 2010 (a difference of +2 per cent).

Here is the up-weighted Entertainment Top 40:
