New details have emerged about a big screen adaptation of Ubisoft stealth 'em up, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.

Variety reports that Dark Knight Rises and Inception star Tom Hardy (that's right, Bane) will play the series' protagonist Sam Fisher.

Meanwhile the script will be written by Eric Warren Singer, who penned Clive Owen thriller The International.

Ubisoft has had preliminary talks with Warner Bros and Paramount, but the Splinter Cell movie has not been set up with a studio yet.

"Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills," said Ubisoft Motion Picture CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet.

"His involvement in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell mvie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike.

"Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment and... we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story... while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans."

More than 23m Splinter Cell games have been sold to date. The sixth title, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was announced at E3 last year and is due for release this spring.

Ubisoft is also working on an Assassin's Creed movie with New Regency and Michael Fassbender.
