News that Nintendo’s Wii U WILL support two GamePads after all has come as a relief – but don’t expect the feature to be ready for launch.

Nintendo had initially stated that the console would only support one GamePad at a time, but this stance was changed at E3 last week.

"Games need to be built that can take advantage of the two GamePad controllers," Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime told Gamasutra. "It's going to be well after launch for those game experiences to come to life.

"Asymmetric gameplay is going to be the next major step forward, just like active play was when we launched the Wii. We think that's where developers will focus first, then there will be multiple experiences that have two GamePads."

The news seemingly also confirms that Wii U will ship with just the one GamePad when it is released later this year.

Don’t forget, of course, that the console will also support all of Wii’s controllers, as well as the new Wii U Pro Controller.
