Ubisoft sets up film division

French publisher Ubisoft is launching its own movie division to bring its games properties to TVs and cinemas.

Popular titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon could be transformed into films and TV shows through Ubisoft Motion Pictures, following the launch of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in cinemas last year. The film is based on a Ubisoft property and was produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

Ubisoft’s new movie arm will be led by Jean-Julien Baronnet, the former CEO of French movie studio EuropaCorp, reports Variety. And Jean de Rivieres – who looked after distribution at Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures France – will handle international sales and marketing for Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

Ubisoft previously launched an Assassin’s Creed: Lineage movie online in late 2009 to support the release of its Assassin’s Creed II game. The film was produced by Hybride, a special effects studio Ubisoft acquired in 2008.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has grossed over $335m worldwide.
