UK CHARTS: Call of Duty shoots back to the top

While a late sales surge drove EA’s FIFA 09 to claim the Christmas 2008 games No.1 last week, the title has been usurped by Call of Duty: World at War which is once again the UK’s number one title.

The Activision Blizzard FPS returns to the top, although EA still has a firm grip on the top three – FIFA sinks just one place to No.2 and Need For Speed Undercover rises up to No.3.

The NFS rise in fact knocks Nintendo racer Mario Kart Wii down to No.4, followed by evergreen Wii game and controller pack Wii Play.

The charts for the week ending December 27th, Eidos too saw a rise up the charts – its Tomb Raider Underworld title rose three places to number six.

Below it, Activision Blizzard claim another two slots in the Top 10, with Guitar Hero World Tour jumping up four places to seventh and Quantum of Solace slipping down to eighth.

Sega rounds out the rest of the Top 10, with two Sonic titles seeing sales spikes – Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Sonic Unleashed sit at 9th and 10th respectively, the latter rising ten places from 20.

Elsewhere in the charts, there’s more evidence of the Christmas sales having an effect on some titles – DS exclusive Professor Layton is once again out of the listing, suggesting the game has once again sold out; but EA title Mirror’s Edge has jumped 15 place to 21st, presumably thanks to the wide-spread discounting on the game, with some retailers dropping the price of the game to as low as 14.99.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 has also jumped up the listing, up from 26th to 18.

The Gfk-ChartTrack top ten for the week ending December 27th is as follows:

1. Call of Duty: World at War
2. FIFA 09
3. Need For Speed: Undercover
4. Mario Kari Wii
5. Wii Play
6. Tomb Raider: Underworld
7. Guitar Hero: World Tour
8. Quantum of Solace
9. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
10. Sonic Unleashed
