UK CHARTS: Just Cause 2 is no.1

Tropical action outing Just Cause 2 has become the tenth game to claim the top spot in the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 since the turn of the year.

What’s all the more impressive is that Square Enix’s title had to fend off some very high-profile opposition to claim its victory – Nintendo’s Pokemon SoulSilver, which claims the second spot in the listings. It’s sister release Pokemon HeartGold claims number four, falling short of beating EA’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 at number three.

The question now is whether Rico can do what the likes of God of War and Final Fantasy have failed to do – hold on to the prestigious no.1 crown.

Last week’s number one, Sony’s God of War III, falls from first to seventh, with Just Dance hanging onto a top five spot in fifth and Activision’s perennially popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 climbing from 10th to sixth.

Deep Silver’s Prison Break: The Conspiracy claims 17th in its first week, whilst Ubisoft’s violent Wii title Red Steel 2 can only debut in 34th – a result that surely won’t help Nintendo’s mature-gaming credentials.

Here’s the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 10 in full (for the week ending March 27th):

1. Just Cause 2 (Square Enix)
2. Pokemon SoulSilver (Nintendo)
3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA)
4. Pokemon HeartGold (Nintendo)
5. Just Dance (Ubisoft)
6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
7. God of War III (Sony)
8. Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix)
9. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
10. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
