UK CHARTS: MW2 still on top

Strong pre-Christmas sales kept Modern Warfare 2 at the top of the UK games chart, according to the latest report from GfK-ChartTrack/ELSPA.

The game, which was last week named as the Christmas No.1 on December 21st, maintained its place in the following five days of Christmas trading with a 17 per cent rise in sales for the week ending December 26th.

However FIFA 10 has been closing the gap, with sales also up 18 per cent – sales of the football game, which is available on a wider spread of formats, were just 2,000 units behind Modern Warfare 2.

There’s merely a reshuffle elsewhere in the top 10 this week. With sales up five per cent, Assassin’s Creed II returns to number three; Wii Sports Resort is a non-mover at No.4, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games rises to No.5.

But Ubisoft’s Avatar movie tie-in makes it into the top 10 for the first time following the film’s strong box office performance in the UK. Sales of the game were up 41 per cent week on week.

The highest climber of the week, however, was EA/Harmonix’s The Beatles: Rock Band, which returned to the top 40 at No.26 thanks to a number of retailer promotions and price reductions on the software.

The full top 10 is as follows:

1. CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 (Activision)
2. FIFA 10 (EA)
3. ASSASSIN’S CREED II (Ubisoft)
4. WII SPORTS RESORT (Nintendo)
5. MARIO & SONIC AT OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES (Sega)
6. WII FIT PLUS (Nintendo)
7. NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII (Nintendo)
8. JAMES CAMERON’S AVATAR: THE GAME (Ubisoft)
9. MARIO KART WII (Nintendo)
10. FORZA MOTORSPORT 3
