Sony’s PS4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has been crowned the best game of 2016 by reviews aggregator Metacritic.

The title finished the year with a 93 per cent review rating. That does make it the second lowest rated winning game of the last five years, however, ahead of 2014’s Super Smash Bros, which scored 92 per cent, but behind 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V (95%), 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V (97%) and 2012’s The Walking Dead (95%).

The site does note an ongoing lack of killer scoring software on next-gen consoles. Only six unique games actually scored 90 or more across the year, and even one of those was an expansion. Only two titles – Inside and Overwatch – were new IP, although that’s up on the one new IP that joined the 90+ club last year (Bloodborne).

Here’s Metacritic’s 2016 90+ titles:

  1. Uncharted 4 (PS4) 93%
  2. Inside (Xbox One) 92%
  3. Out of the Park Baseball 17 (PC) 92%
  4. The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (PC) 92%
  5. Overwatch (PC) 91%
  6. Overwatch (Xbox One) 91%
  7. Forza Horizon 3 (Xbox One) 91%
  8. The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (PS4) 91%
  9. Inside (PS4) 91%
  10. Overwatch (PS4) 90%
  11. Stephen’s Sausage Roll (PC) 90%
  12. NBA 2K17 (2K Games) 90%
  13. Kentucky Route Zero – Act IV (PC) 90%

PS4 had six 90+ games, which was the highest total for any platform. However, PS4’s average Metascore fell from 70.5 per cent last year to 69.1 per cent. A lot more games were released for the machine, too – 445, compared to 2015’s 276. 13 exclusives scored 75 per cent or more.

Xbox One had seven 90+ exclusive games in 2015 but this year managed only three. Its review average was down, too, dropping from 70.4 per cent to 69.8 per cent. Only 44 Wii U games were released in 2016, down from 80 in 2015. None of them scored 90 per cent or more.

Activision’s Ghostbusters was the lowest rated game of the year, scoring 30 per cent on PS4. Others in the hall of shame included Dino Dini’s Kick Off Revival (31%), Soda Drinker Pro (31%), Weeping Doll (34%), Langrisser Re:Incarnation Tensei (35%), 7 Days to Die (35%) and Umbrella Crops (36%).
