As claimed by MCV just last week, US retailer Walmart has confirmed that it is to have a second stab at cracking the pre-owned video games market.
“Walmart is always looking for new ways to help give customers more convenience and savings, and we continually test concepts with new products and businesses in stores and online,” a statement released to IndustryGamers claims.
In 2009 Walmart trailed a trade-in kiosk system in a number of stores, though this experiment was ended later that year. This new move comes following an agreement with start-up firm Game Trade who will lease space in stores.
So far only five outlets have been confirmed as offering pre-owned games and Walmart’s cautious approach to its second attempt at cracking the sector means that it might be quite some time before the scheme is rolled out nationwide.
“These locations will offer previously-owned games, movies and entertainment hardware at competitive values,” the retailer added. “Game Trade stores will accept trade-ins of media and other entertainment items for Game Trade store credit or cash.
“There are no plans at this time to lease space for more locations in Walmart stores beyond these five until we understand more about customer response, which we will monitor with great interest.”
Cornershop specialist 7-Eleven last month announced its entry into the pre-owned sector thanks to a stock buying partnership with Game trading technologies.
