Worldwide digital games revenues climb 4% in February

SuperData Research Worldwide Digital Games Revenue Report for February has shown a global year-on-year increase of four per cent for the sector.

That represents total global digital game revenues of $7.83bn for the month. Mobile and console digital sales grew by nine and eight per cent respectively, offsetting declines in free-to-play, social gaming and pay-to-play mobile gaming.

US digital game revenues were up 6.4 per cent year-on-year, with the US console segment rocketing 18 per cent.

Battlefield continues to lead the FPS digital segment, shifting more copies across console and PC that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Titanfall 2 combined. Saying that, Infinite Warfare won the FPS DLC stakes thanks to the release of its first DLC content.

For Honor did especially well, shifting 700k+ digital units. However, performing less well was Blizzard’s Hearthstone, whose mobile revenues fell both month-on-month and year-on-year, hitting a record low on both iOS and Android.

The slump is blamed on the recent gameplay changes implemented by Blizzard, as well as increased competition on mobile. Desktop revenues have declined more slowly.
