40GB PS3 boasts revised architecture

reports that as well as the more publicised differences between existing PS3 hardware and the newly released 40GB version, such as the removal of the card reader and backwards compatibility, the machines also boast a revised Cell CPU.

The new 65nm version of Sony’s much-touted processor consumes less power than the existing 90nm versions, seeing usage drop from 200 Watts to 135 Watts.

As a result the machine makes less noise than existing models and runs at a lower temperature – though neither of these issues have dogged the PS3 in the same way as some of its competitors.

Other on-board changes have also been noted, including a smaller heat pipe, a new version of the motherboard and a battery to keep the clock up to date in the event that the console is disconnected from the mains.
