ESRB automates ratings process

As of today US ratings body the ESRB will begin using a computer program to assign ratings to digital video games.

The New York Times says that E (Everyone), T (Teen) and M (Mature) ratings will be automatically assigned according to a number of parameters "designed to replicate the ingrained cultural norms and predilections of the everyday American consumer".

Categories include offensive language and sexuality, though does not ask about other controversial topics such as religious imagery.

The information will be gathered by a questionnaire completed by the publishers, with penalties imposed for nondisclosure.

It is claimed that the move is designed to allow the ESRB to better handle the vast number of digital releases, which eclipse traditional boxed console releases every week.

It is not known if the ESRB has had discussions with the likes of Apple or Facebook.
