Guardian of Light not Tomb Raider sequel

Following the global surprise that accompanied the announcement of the digital-only Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, the game’s developer Crystal Dynamics has stressed that the title should not be seen as a proper instalment in the Tomb Raider series.

It then went on to suggest that development of a ‘full’ 3D console Tomb Raider title – otherwise known as Tomb Raider 9 – is ongoing.

You know this isn’t Tomb Raider, right?” a representative for the developer stated on its Facebook page, as reported by Siliconera. We are working on two games, but this is something fresh and different! Wait and see.”

This was later expanded on with: Don’t worry! [The two projects] are separate and LCGoL doesn’t affect the ‘other project’.”

The comments seem to put into perspective the decision to drop the ‘Tomb Raider’ moniker from the game’s title and should reassure any retailers who felt disgruntled at what at the time appeared to be a very high-profile shun.
