Half-Life 2 VR has been Greenlit

Valve’s immensely popular Half-Life 2 is heading to VR after a fan mod for the game was successfully Greenlit on Steam.

The game, which has been in development since 2013, will be released on both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and will fully support motion controllers.

Players will be required to own Half-Life 2, Half Life 2: Episode 1, and Half Life 2: Episode 2 on Steam, as assets from all three titles will be required.

Effects and textures are being updated so as to look decent when up close and personal. The UI is also being given a 3D makeover, as are the weapons interactions. Multiple locomotion options will also be offered, presumably including teleportation and manual locomotion.

We have been Greenlit! A great day for Half-Life 2, and therefore, the world,” the Source VR Mod Team said in an update. The whole team offers their heartfelt thanks to the 15,769 wonderful people who have voted for us at the time of writing! The 95 per cent yes rate and all the positive comments have given us many warm fuzzies over the last couple of days and kept us on the front page of the Steam community and the Half-Life 2 page.

Having the project on Steam will make it easier for us to develop, and of course much easier for people to install and update when we start releasing builds. We know the top question on everyone’s minds is when exactly that will be, but these things they take time, especially with a team of unpaid volunteers.

The best we can do for now is ‘soon’, as soon as the hands of our programmers and artists allow it.

On that note; if anyone reading this has some sort of relevent programming or graphics skillset and wants to help make Half-Life 2 great again, then do please contact us through our Greenlight page or subreddit.”
