Miitomo, the social app that spearheaded Nintendo’s push into the mobile space, has been given just a few months to live.
On Wednesday the company announced that Miitomo’s servers would be closing down on May 9, 26 months after the title’s 2016 launch.
The title was typically Nintendo, insofar as it was completely unexpected and put a new shine on the concept of a social network: players created and avatar and then answered questions, with these answers circulated among friends so everyone could find out more about each other.
You could get cutesy outfits, you could take AR photos of your Miitomo avatar in real places, and interact with friends in a variety of ways you just didn’t see anywhere else. All of these moments will soon be lost like tears in the rain, however, when the servers close forever.
The app was fairly successful on launch, picking up a million registrations through its opening weekend. However, the game was not a significant revenue driver. It was the first game in a five game deal between DeNA and Nintendo, with the next three games in the partnership being Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, all of which launched fairly successfully.
The final game in the partnership hasn’t yet been announced, and there’s no reason to believe it could be Advance Wars, but a games journalist can dream, right?
