Ouya 2.0 launching next year with updated controller

Android-powered microconsole Ouya’s second iteration will arrive sometime in 2014.

Speaking with Polygon, founder Julie Uhrman touched on what the hardware company is looking forward to for the console’s second year – which includes Ouya 2.0 and a new controller to match.

"Our plan is to have Ouya 2.0 sometime next year,” Uhrman said.

We haven’t finalized the date of that. We’re still determining what exactly we want that to be."

Uhrman stressed the focus will be on performance for the original Ouya’s successor, which has been criticized by some for being underpowered in comparison to many smartphones.

"For the hardware, we are looking at different chips. We are looking at what type of performance we want."

Ouya is also working on an updated controller, with Uhrman explaining that the company is putting the new peripheral through ceaseless testing based on player feedback.

"[We’re taking feedback on] iterating that software, fixing the triggers, fixing the thumbsticks and if that doesn’t work, we’ll iterate it again and if we decide that’s not the right path, we’ll change it."

Curiously, when Uhrman was questioned on if there would be any indication on packaging to point out which controllers are updated, she only offered "you wouldn’t know until you bought it" – perhaps indicating it could arrive ahead of Ouya’s latest console release.
