Paid-for Steam curator recommendations need to be declared

Steam users must be open about paid-for recommendations according to the store’s updated terms and conditions.

These have been updated for Steam curators. Now they read: If you’ve accepted money or other compensation for making a product review or for posting a recommendation, you must disclose this fact in your recommendation.”

Last month the online retailer underwent a massive update, entitled the Steam Discovery Update. This included the introduction of a curation system whereby users can list their favourite titles.

The updated terms and conditions follows the revelation that YouTube personality TotalBiscuit’s list featured Planetside 2, a game which was declared as sponsored content on his YouTube channel but not on his Steam Curator List.

TotalBiscuit has since removed this game as it could potentially pose a conflict of interest.”
