Capcom is to remove Games for Windows Live from three more of its PC titles.
Support for Microsoft’s unpopular service will be patched out of Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, with all three moving over to Steamworks.
With the global popularity of the Steamworks platform, we’ve seen high demand from fans to bring these highly requested titles to this platform. Moving to Steamworks will allow more fans across the world to enjoy these games,” the publisher said.
Current owners of these PC titles will be transitioned over to the Steamworks versions early next year. Once we have specific dates ironed out, we’ll have more information about all three titles and their respective launch days so stay tuned.”
Capcom has already done the same to Street Fighter IV, although that did bring with it certain complications for some owners – as was the case with Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
Microsoft has struggled with Games for Windows Live for years, promising various revamps over that time but then claiming last year that it was to terminate the service. This was retracted with a fresh vow of support this summer, although the truth of its intentions remains somewhat unclear.
What is clear is that most PC gamers shudder at the mention of GFWL, with titles such as Dark Souls the subject of protests from its user base. Bandai Namco has promised to investigate GFWL removal, although we’re yet to hear anything concrete.
