Nintendo’s long awaited Super Mario Maker 2 has finally released – and very much found its audience as it’s debuted at the top of the UK weekly physical charts. The Switch exclusive has also done much better compared to its predecessor.
Sales were up 85.5 per cent compared to launch sales for Wii U’s Super Mario Maker, released in 2015, and 241.4 per cent up compared to the 3DS version that launched in 2016. Even adding up launch sales for both the Wii U and 3DS versions, Super Mario Maker 2 still has sold 20 per cent more copies on its first week than the two SKUs combined.
There were two other new titles in the Top Ten this week, with Codemasters’ F1 2019 debuting at No.3. Sales were on a par with F1 2018’s launch sales, only slightly down 2.9 per cent compared to last year’s entry.
Sega’s Judgment, which was withdrawn from sale in Japan earlier this year after one of its performers was arrested on alleged drug charges, debuted in the UK charts at No.4. The controversy might have served the Yakuza spin-off, as its sales soared in Japan after it was withdrawn, before Sega confirmed its re-release with a new voice actor. Judgment sold 11.4 per cent less copies than the latest release in the Yakuza franchise, the 2018 remake Yakuza Kiwami 2.
Meanwhile, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was pushed to No.2 for its second week in the charts, after debuting at No.1 last week. Its sales were only down 48 per cent week-on-week.
Further down the charts, Frogwares and Bigben’s The Sinking City entered the charts at No.12, while Ravenscourt’s Car Mechanic Simulator charted at No.23 for its first week on shelves.
Thanks to this wealth of new releases, the market performed well, with unit sales up 13 per cent week-on-week and up 37 per cent in value. Revenue was down 11.1 per cent year-on-year though, while units were down 15.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
