3D PRINTERS VOTED BEST GADGET LAUNCH OF 2013; GAMES GADGETS DOMINATE TOP TEN

3D printers have been voted the best gadget launch of 2013 in a survey of 3,900 British gadget fans conducted by Gadget Show Live @ Christmas. The printers, which were invented in the 80s but have only become accessible to the general public this year, took nearly a third (31 per cent) of the votes.

In second place was the iPhone’s biggest competitor – the Samsung Galaxy S4 – with 22 per cent of the vote, followed by two pieces of kit from Sony – the 4K OLED TV (13 per cent) and the Xperia 2 (10 per cent). In terms of sectors, gaming outperformed all others with three gaming gadgets securing top ten spots: the Nvidia Project Shield (five per cent), Razer Blade Pro (three per cent) and Kickstarter console the Ouya (one per cent).

The full top ten looks like this:

1              3D printer     31%

2              Samsung Galaxy S4     22%

3              Sony 4K OLED TV    13%

4              Sony Xperia Z1     10%

5              Pebble     7%

6              Lenova Horizon Tablet     6%

7              Nvidia Project Shield     5%

8              Razer Blade Pro     3%

9              Fitbit Flex     2%

10            Ouya     1%

Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley commented: “It’s great to see 3D printing on top of the list. We’re yet to see the full impact it will have on our lives. But it looks set to be huge - on the way we make things and the things we make, both at home and in factories. We’re already seeing its potential in the aerospace, car and electronics industries – from making previously unimaginable components possible to keeping old planes flying by making once obsolete spare parts.

“Consumer 3D printers are far from perfect, but it’s one of the most exciting areas of technology in the near future. It’ll be interesting to see what new software is created to help us make things ourselves and how we cope with new problems like the piracy of physical products.”
