A new Tale of Tales, selected for IndieCade E3 Showcase

Tale of Tales are currently working on a new release entitled Luxuria Superbia. They hope to release the game for iOS and Android this summer and for PC and Mac in the fall.

Though still a work in progress, Luxuria Superbia has already been selected by IndieCade for their E3 Showcase. So a prototype of the game will be playable in the IndieCade booth at E3.

“Luxuria Superbia is a game about lust and pride,” explains designer Michaël Samyn. “It’s a journey from blankness to color, from darkness to light, from earth to heaven. It is both sensual and spiritual. Its abstract aesthetics remind of flowers and temples. It can be played casually or strategically, depending on your preference.”

Luxuria Superbia deviates quite a bit from previous titles like The Path, The Graveyard or the recently released Bientôt l’été.

Aesthetically it is completely abstract, it contains no characters and no story or a simulated environment. Luxuria Superbia even flirts a little with conventional game elements such as challenges and rewards in ways that still hold true to their "notgames" philosophy.

“The title of the game is derived from the medieval concept of the Seven Deadly Sins. Luxuria is the sin of Lust and Superbia is the sin of Pride. It strikes us that these are no longer considered negative in the present day. Indeed, one could consider Lust and Pride lofty ways of referring to challenge and reward, the essence of many game experiences.

To a certain extent, Luxuria Superbia is a game about playing. It not only attempts to give you pleasure and even asks you to give it pleasure. It also has pleasure as its subject matter.”

Luxuria Superbia is a first result from a research project codenamed Cncntrc that Tale of Tales undertook in 2010 and 2011, a prototype of which was demonstrated at a secret meeting during the 2011 Notgames Fest in Cologne. The project investigated the similarities between sensual pleasure and spiritual growth, against a backdrop of ancient cosmology and botany.

The music for Luxuria Superbia was created by Belgian composer Walter Hus, who also signed for the soundtrack of Bientôt l’été.

Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn have been collaborating since 1999. In

2003 they started Tale of Tales with the intention of exploring

videogames technology as an artistic medium. With games like The Path,

The Graveyard, The Endless Forest, Fatale, Bientôt l'été and Vanitas,

they have already left their mark on games.
