Ahoy and Avast!

Augmented Planet's readers trawled the seven seas for the first rate augmented reality applications and experiences of the year. Today the cat is out of the bag and we can announce AR! Pirates as the best Augmented Reality Game!

AR! Pirates, on iPhone and Symbian, was developed by those bucko hands at Optricks and published by yer mateys at SpecialMove Games.

AR! Pirates challenges you to defend your treasure island against fleets of marauding pirate galleons right in front of your very eyes! Using Augmented Reality and natural feature recognition, the gameplay appears to take place right on your tabletop.

Send the pirate scallywags to Davy Jones' Locker before the pirate cogs drop anchor and plunder your Captain's coffer. Touch the screen to fire your guns while dodging around your island to avoid incoming fire. Loot bonus pieces of eight and power-ups as pirate ships sink in flames. AR! Pirates is chock-a-block with firearms, pirate ships and attack patterns!

AR! Pirates augmented reality system uses an innovative 3 coin marker system for tracking that provides a stable and immersive gaming experience, which can be played at any scale. Use coins to play on your desk or larger markers such as flying discs or paper plates to play with huge ships in the park. But watch out as the larger your markers are, the more active you have to be when playing the game.
