14 th May 2013 Lockwood Publishing is taking its expertise and experience in social games, virtual worlds and desirable virtual items gained through its long term association with PlayStation Home, to new platforms and new territories. In addition it is amalgamating all its operations under the Lockwood Publishing banner.
The studio has been working, using Unity, on Avakin an avatar based platform. It will be rolling out the first in a series of games for it, Avakin Poker, in May/ June for iOS, Android and browser. Lockwood believes it is the first bespoke 3D avatar based poker game to be built for mobile platforms.
In common with similar systems such as Xbox LIVE Avatars and PlayStation Home the player’s customisable avatar will be used in multiple applications, all stored within a single user account across multiple platforms. However, it differs in that it has been designed specifically for mobile platforms, also allowing PvP cross platform play in real-time.
Following a soft UK launch, which will enable Lockwood to tweak the system based on user feedback, there are plans for the Avakin platform to be made available to Latin American gamers through the BoaCompra network this summer. Lockwood is currently exploring other partnerships in several other big F2P territories.
In announcing the changes at Lockwood Publishing, Joel Kemp Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder said, “The changes we are seeing at Lockwood are reflective of the changes most developers are seeing within the wider games industry. Lockwood has been fortunate to have gained so much knowledge of social games, virtual worlds and goods through working on PlayStation Home. We also have a well-established and vibrant community as a result of our association with the Home platform. Now we hope we have applied that expertise to mobile platforms and believe that Avakin offers mobile gamers something that is genuinely new and ground breaking. It’s satisfying to know that Avakin will ultimately be available globally through partnerships such as the one we have with BoaCompra. We are excited that Lockwood Publishing is expanding its horizons both creatively and geographically and see this as a new era for us.“
