Various apps with AR functionality are already available for numerous smartphones– including the Apple iPhone. Augmented reality makes it possible to enhance live camera images with information that is overlaid precisely where it should be thanks to GPS-based data acquisition. An AR travel guide app could, for example, overlay additional information about sights when they are viewed through a smartphone’s camera. The computer industry has also been experimenting with ways to employ AR technology to produce computer games that are as realistic as possible for quite some time now. However, the technical complexity and costs that result when realizing augmented reality functionality have slowed the spread of this technology.
doPanic is endeavoring to change that with its PanicAR framework, which makes it possible to easily equip apps for the iPhone and the iPad 2 with AR functions. As a native framework for iOS, PanicAR is extremely flexible in its application and can be seamlessly integrated in
previously existing apps. This software is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and will soon be compatible with iPad 2 and also enables developers to integrate AR graphics in different configurations (radar, portrait or landscape viewing modes) in any and every app.
The demo version of PanicAR is available as a free download and can be used at any time.
The framework includes detailed technical documentation and a complete demo project. The free demo app AR Notes is available at the App Store and shows this framework in action. A commercial license can be purchased for under 500 euros, a fraction of what other AR
developer kits sell for.
