2 October 2013, Leamington Spa, UK. Backspace, a two week festival celebrating Leamington Spa's video game heritage, has just won its organisers a Gold Award for best event at the prestigious tenth annual Fresh Awards. Indie PR agency Press Space and Leamington-based Vital Marketing were presented with the award at a ceremony in Manchester last Thursday.

The Fresh Awards are designed to recognise and reward creativity, effectiveness and innovation in the creative, digital and media arenas in the UK and Ireland, and are judged by a panel of highly respected PR, marketing and events industry professionals. Press Space and Vital took home the honours in the Best PR Experiential Campaign or Event category, beating off stiff competition from a number of internationally acclaimed agencies.

The Backspace festival ran for two weeks in May and June this year and was the centrepiece of the second Leamington Looks Back heritage festival. A two week exhibition told the 30-year story of video game development in the town, and was accompanied by a dozen companion events including the 'Spa-Cade' games trail, RaspberryPi workshops, a careers evening and several fund-raising events that raised over £1,200 for disabled gamers charity SpecialEffect and local charity Myton Hospice.

Event Director and Owner of Press Space PR, Natalie Griffith was thrilled with the award: "The local game development community in Leamington has long been a highly successful and innovative one and we were blown away by their support for Backspace, from the largest and most established studio to the smallest two-man indie teams. The festival would simply not have been possible without their generosity and hard work, and we were honoured to be able to tell their story in this way for the first time. This award is for them.”

Originator of Backspace and Executive Creative Director of Vital, Craig Spivey was equally thrilled: "We set out to show the people of Leamington what great stuff goes on in their town. For Backspace to go on to receive an award like this really demonstrates to the rest of the country and the games industry what a creative place it is to live and work."

Both companies are also nominated for Backspace in the Best Event category in the upcoming Chartered Institute of PR's Pride Awards, which will be announced in early November.
