Creative industries experts to arrive in Dundee for major conference

Digital Spark 2011 brings together business, creative and legal experts to look at the crucial issues surrounding protecting creative works and safely and effectively using them to generate profits.

Speakers include‘Father of the PlayStation’ Chris Deering, one of the most influential figures in the international digital entertainment industry of the last 30 years, as well as Hogarth Andall, Director of IP and Technology at Sony; Will Page, Chief Economist at PRS for Music; and Andy Payne, Chairman of games trade body UKIE.

Dr Margaret Hartnett, Digital Spark organiser and Head of Research, Enterprise and Innovation Services at Abertay University, said:“Digital Spark addresses a very important– and often overlooked– area of successful creative businesses: protecting the content you make and ensuring you are paid a fair price for your work.

“Once all the hard work of developing new games, software or creative content is done, it’s absolutely critical that companies aren’t at risk of having their work copied or imitated.

“And after they’ve got proper protection in place, many companies then fail to use their intellectual property to generate new profits. One issue we’ll be looking at is how to take your work into new industries or new countries, to create new revenue streams and fund the expansion of your business.”

She added:“We’re delighted to host welcome such stellar speakers to Abertay University and are looking forward to a truly stimulating, exciting and practical Digital Spark 2011, looking at the issues underlying the future development of the industry.”

The first Digital Spark conference was a great success last year, and the popular format of introductory workshops on the basics of IP, interactive masterclasses and expert panel discussions will continue this year.

Digital Spark 2011 is being organised by Abertay University and will be hosted in the UK Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education.
