Dare to be Digital 2013 applications open today

For immediate release: Tuesday 22 January

Dare to be Digital, the world’s leading computer game design competition for students, opens today for entries – a unique opportunity for aspiring professionals to win their very own BAFTA.

Run by the University of Abertay Dundee, Dare to be Digital sees hundreds of students every year competing to become one of 15 teams to build a working game prototype in just nine weeks.

The games then go on show to the public and to industry experts in Dundee in August, with three winning teams picked to compete for the BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award.

Entries should be made online at http://www.daretobedigital.com/

The last BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award went to Swallowtail Games for Tick Tock Toys, a family-friendly puzzle game for iPad and iPhone. Since the win, the team have set up a company to finish the game and commercially release it.

Sophia George, Director of Swallowtail Games, said: “Dare to be Digital has dramatically changed our lives – we never thought we’d win a BAFTA when we entered, and the competition pushed us to become games industry professionals in just a few weeks.

“The nine weeks is a whirlwind experience of hard work and mentoring from industry professionals, all building to the huge Dare ProtoPlay festival in Dundee in August where thousands of people get to play your game.

“I’d strongly urge anyone wanting to work in the games industry to apply for Dare to be Digital. If you’re lucky enough to get in, it will change your life.”

Swallowtail Games is preparing to release Tick Tock Toys before the next BAFTA Video Games Awards in March.

Competitors from Dare to be Digital 2012 will compete in March for the next ‘Ones to Watch’ award, with Starcrossed, Pixel Story and Project Thanatos up for the prize.

Gregor White, Director of Dare to be Digital at Abertay University, said: “Last year we received a record number of entries, with hundreds and hundreds of students looking to get a place on Dare to be Digital.

“Any talented art, design and programming students wanting to create computer games for a living should definitely apply. Everyone who takes part in Dare gets professional experience and contacts you just can’t get anywhere else.”
