Dare to be Digital – one week to apply to win a BAFTA!

Entries should be made online at  http://www.daretobedigital.com/ by 5pm on 9 April.

The competition brings 15 teams of five students to the University of Abertay Dundee each summer to build a working game prototype in just nine weeks.

The games then go on show to the public and to industry experts at the Dare ProtoPlay games festival in Dundee in August, alongside games from established companies. Three winning teams are then picked to compete for the BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award.

BAFTA winner Andrew MacLean from Dare to be Digital 2012 said: "Dare to be Digital is such an incredible experience for the 15 teams lucky enough to take part.

"There isn't any other opportunity for students to create their own game, work with expert industry mentors, put their game on show to thousands of members of the public, and then be considered for a BAFTA as well.

"I'd strongly, strongly encourage anyone who wants to work in the games industry to apply for Dare to be Digital 2013. It's a life-changing opportunity, so get your team together and send your game idea in now!"

Andrew was part of the Finnish and Scottish team Kind of a Big Deal, the latest BAFTA Ones to Watch Award winners. Their game, Starcrossed, has now been commercially released on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace and Google Play.

Kind of a Big Deal were supported to take part in Dare to be Digital by the Scottish Government as last year’s Nordic competitor. Andrew joined the team from Abertay University as their Scottish ambassador.

Elaine Russell, Dare to be Digital Project Manager, added: “Dare is a life-changing opportunity for students looking to step into the games industry.

“Coming to Abertay University for a summer to work solidly on your own game, which then goes on show to thousands of members of the public, is an amazing experience.

“If you love games and want to make them for a living, then apply to take part in Dare to be Digital 2013.”

All applicants are also required to do a video ‘pitch’, explaining their game idea.

Teams who are still looking for additional members can find students from their country on the Dare to be Digital website or Facebook page -  http://www.facebook.com/daretobedigital
