Future stars of the UK games industry

Date: This year’s winners of the industry recognised student games development competition have been announced. The Rising Star Winner is Nadeem Joseph Alam of UCLAN and the Search for a Star Winner is Gavin Jones UCLAN. In addition to the regular competitions a new category has been created as a result of the achievements of one individual who exceeded all expectations .James Mintram, Northumbria University and Lemon Moose Games, has been crowned Shooting Star winner. The newly created category recognises the achievements of young indie studios created by students. The students have already caught the eyes of the industry and Gavin Jones has been snapped up by Boss Alien as an employee.

Search for a Star Winner, Gavin Jones, UCLAN, said: “Entering SFAS seemed a natural decision as an opportunity to apply and demonstrate my abilities. The second round of SFAS in particular proved both a fun exercise and good practice - as well as a timely cure for any post-degree project inertia I may have stumbled into. Having done well in the competition seemed to lead very quickly to job offers, ultimately landing me my first job as a programmer in the industry.”

Shooting Star Winner, James Mintram, Northumbria University, said: "Search for a star was a great opportunity to put everything I have learned over the last 3 years to the test. The second round was particularly useful, being exposed to code that I have never seen before and be asked to fix bugs and implement new features."
