GAME OVER? CAN VIDEO GAME JOURNALISTS STILL MAKE MONEY?

8 April 2013 - London, UK/... The video games industry is EXPLODING. But, as a journalist or a writer, can you still make money by writing about it? So many big-name magazines and websites have recently shuttered their doors and there are so many people wanting in and willing to work for free that it can sometimes seem impossible. Come and join some of the leading narrative writers, editors and journalists in the business to hear their opinions at this NUJ-sponsored event.

There will be three short panels/talks, with plenty of time for Q&A and chatting afterwards. These are as follows...

HOW TO MAKE MONEY AS A WRITER IN VIDEO GAMES

  • Will Porter – ex PC Zone, now co-running Hookshot and more.
  • Dan Griliopoulos - ex PR turned full time freelance.
  • Lewis Denby – Operations Manager at Beefjack.
  • Sinan Kubba - UK Editor at Joystiq.

Our panel will talk about what they've done that's worked. Dabbling in PR, writing their own games, setting up their own Web sites, freelancing full-time, how they blagged a staff job, offering their services as a games consultant and writing the stories for games, all things to consider if you're a writer wanting to make money in this industry.

THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES JOURNALISM

  • Steve Boxer  - The Guardian

Veteran games journalist Steve Boxer has been here since it all began, and he will present a brief and fascinating look at how games journalism has evolved and changed from its beginnings of fanzines, magazines like ST Format with 3.5" cover discs to today, where people can live blog events like E3, anyone can vidcast/podcast and writing about games is big business.

WRITING THE STORIES FOR GAMES

  • Rhianna Pratchett  - Freelance games writer, Tomb Raider reboot
  • Ed Stern – in-house game writer with Splash Damage.
  • Andy Walsh – Game writer, Prince of Persia and many others.

This is a fascinating new industry, and the fact that good games are even better with great stories is something that developers are slowly waking up to. Ever had an idea for a game? Wished you could write the next Tomb Raider game? Looked at a game and winced at the awful story? Narrative design and scriptwriting is something else for journalists to consider venturing into.

We promise not to keep you too long as we explain a little bit about us and give you some good reasons to join. NUJ representatives will also be at the event, if you have any questions or wanted any advice on work issues.

We'll serve you up some beverages and FREE FOOD before we get started. After the talks and Q&As, we'll have time for some networking (not working?) fuelled by lovely, lovely free drinks at the bar, before adjourning to a local hostelry for the deepthink stuff, and potentially more free drink/networking loveliness. There's a nominal charge of £5 to cover refreshments, although we'll waive this if you're really pushed. NUJ members FREE, and we will also issue a refund if you join the NUJ on the day.
