Gamers, ready! Pro gamer tournament announced for Dare ProtoPlay festival

For immediate release: Thursday 4 August

World champion professional gamers will arrive in Dundee next week for a unique ‘Masters’ tournament at the Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival, organised by the University of Abertay Dundee.

Paul 'Astz' McGarrity of Team Dignitas, the world’s foremost professional games outfit, is bringing together seasoned professionals from around the world to compete on a classic title – Unreal Tournament.

With the support of Intel Corporation, Bigfoot Networks, Artisan Gaming and the Jee Network the professional competitors will go head-to-head throughout the Friday 12th-Sunday 14th August computer games festival on incredibly high-powered PCs, with a winner announced at the end of the weekend.

The professional gamers, led by Scotland’s own world champion gamer Paul ‘Astz’ McGarrity, will also give talks to the public and one-to-one tuition throughout the Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival.

Astz said: “Dare to be Digital rightly has an incredible reputation around the world, and as a professional computer gamer I’m delighted to have the opportunity to give the public an insight into our world.

“Professional games tournaments are amazingly intense, exciting events, with all the thrills and suspense of watching the world’s best competitors in any sport. The word ‘games’ doesn’t really do justice to how seriously we take this!

“Professional gamers train religiously, just like any other world-class competitor. We think the public will be amazed to see a tournament in a live setting, and to get the chance to learn a few tricks of the trade from the professionals themselves.”

Astz is currently recruiting for professional gamers to take part in the tournament. To register your interest, please visit http://www.jeesports.com/tournament/PC/Unreal-Tournament-2004/153/ASTZatDare2011/home

Elaine Russell, Dare to be Digital manager, added: “The Dare ProtoPlay festival is really about giving everyone an opportunity to have fun, play brand new games and learn more about the thriving culture of gaming.

“Having world-class professionals playing in front of the public seemed like a brilliant way to give people a behind-the-scenes insight into the fascinating world of competitive gaming.

“The skills of professional gamers, and the amount of training they put in, are truly incredible. The Dare ProtoPlay festival will be a great opportunity for people to see for themselves world-class gamers in action.”

The Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival is being held in Dundee’s Caird Hall on Friday 12th-Sunday 14th August and is free.

As well as the professional gamer tournament, all 15 brand new student games created for the Dare to be Digital competition will be on show for the very first time.

There will also be live game jams with professionals and kids building new games from scratch, games industry talks, and a showcase of the latest hardware and games from companies like MEDION AG, Crytek and Sony.
