We asked a few of game developers why they inject humor into their games. Actually we sent this request everyone on the list but only a few responded.
John Murphy, Producer for Octodad said“Because we realized that our team is full of silly, insane people and we wanted to funnel that energy into the game.”
Telltale Games design director Dave Grossman shared the following: “ I do it because humor provides a whole additional source of fun for the audience, and we are after all in the entertainment business. Also, my personal view is that the world is a fairly absurd place, which makes it easier for me to make a game funny than to make it serious. Not that there's anything wrong with serious - I'm just lazy.”
Mike Stemmle said” If I could tolerate sitting down with a shrink for more than thirty seconds without clawing my eyeballs out, I'd probably discover that my desire to make people laugh stems from deep-seated insecurities about my own self-worth and my incessant drive to be loved by EVERYONE.”
Again we asked all the game developers on the list how they feel about HarryBalls naming their games as the funniest for 2010? Only a few responded.
Mike Stemmle, for Sam&Max The Devil’s Playhouse and Back to the Future:“There are moments in your life that stay with you forever. Your first kiss. The birth of your children. That time you bit into a burrito and found a mostly-dead salamander. But these ephemeral zephyrs of joy and revulsion pale in comparison to the soul-tossing tumult of emotions that accompany the news that you’ve has been trebly-blessed by the connoisseurs of comedy at HarryBalls.com. We at Telltale are not sure what we’ve done to deserve such an unalloyed honor, but we promise to keep doing it (whatever it is) in the future.”
John Murphy, Producer for Octodad humorously said, "Octodad is confused as to why people think he is so funny. He takes himself fairly seriously. However, the Octodad team is very excited to hear that people are enjoying the game's humor."
