Korea named as gamescom 2012 partner nation

After last year's event, when the UK presented itself as the leading nation in online and browser games at the world's biggest trade show and event highlight in Cologne - next year sees Koelnmesse, the BIU und KOCCA (Korean Culture & Content Agency) join in partnership

gamescom 2012 is getting steadily closer. After the announcement that exhibition space would be expanded to 140,000 square metres, the next big news has arrived with the naming of the partner nation for 2012. Korea - the global leader in online and browser games - will be the official partner country of gamescom 2012. Organiser Koelnmesse, and its ideal sponsor, the German Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware e.V. - BIU) signed an agreement with KOCCA (Korean Culture & Content Agency) for the corresponding presentation at the world's biggest trade show and event highlight for interactive games. Following in the footsteps of Canada (Americas) and the UK (Europe), gamescom will now join up with partner nation, Korea, and gain a foothold in the Asian games market. Dr. Olaf Coenen, Managing Director of Electronic Arts Germany and Chairman of the BIU: "Thanks to its outstanding position in online and browser games, Korea is an extremely attractive and forward-looking market for many European companies. All players will benefit equally from this partner nation." Katharina C. Hamma, Managing Director of Koelnmesse GmbH: "In the wake of our successful globalisation drive and the establishment of online and browser games in the "online world" in Hall 9, among other areas, gamescom gains another strong push through partner nation Korea." Lee Jae-woong, President & CEO, KOCCA : "Being a partner nation of gamescom is another important step in our international focus. We are delighted with this collaboration with Cologne."

Companies such as NCsoft and Nexon already head the list of leading online and browser game distributors at next year's gamescom. Around 20 companies from Korea had stands in Cologne in 2011. Besides the partner nation, a total of ten other markets and their leading firms will present their interactive entertainment at shared stands.
