LOS ANGELES, CA– La La Land Records expects a successful repeat with their second Electronic Arts (EA) collaboration– Crysis ® 2. The videogame music release is a two disc set, featuring original main themes by Oscar Winning Composer Hans Zimmer. EA and La La Land Records recently released the limited edition eight-disc MEDAL OF HONOR Box Set. Crysis ® 2 is a videogame joint venture between German based Crytek and U.S. based Electronic Arts. Zimmer worked with Lorne Balfe and Crytek’s composers’ Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu in creating the soundtrack --- available now.
Zimmer's numerous film composing credits include the recent boxoffice hits The Dark Knight and Inception for which he was Oscar-nominated. He won the Academy Award for Gladiator. Zimmer’s videogame credits include Activision's blockbuster first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
A sci-fi futuristic shooter game, Crysis ® 2 allows players to fight an alien threat once again, aided by a nanosuit that grants the user superhuman abilities ranging from speed to camouflage. Crysis ® 2 is a story about technology– and technological lust. While the original Crysis ® featured lush tropical environments, Crysis ® 2 takes place in the urban jungle of New York City. The musical goal of the soundtrack is to provoke not only tension and action feelings, but to convey a full range of emotions.
Zimmer explained his music process,“I had an idea for title music. It started off with me doing a main title theme, and then Lorne got involved. I spent far too long doing this opening title theme, but it was just so much fun. It was a typical Zimmer process where I was going to do one theme, and then while I was doing that I had an idea for another one, and then it became another one - it became a whole string of ideas. I think you still feel that there are four distinct musical styles going on. It’s very much Zimmer, there’s very much Lorne Balfe, and there’s very much Slavov and Sillescu.”
Boris Slavov and Tilman Sillescu together created a breathtaking sound-scape, with unique themes for the human and alien characters. According to Slavov,“The idea to use a classical solo violin as a representation of the human spirit against the alien invasion, was for me very strong and emotive. You can hear the violin passing like a gentle yet firm thread through the score.” In contrast, Sillescu’s alien themes are“action tracks representing the dark alien nature…a music emblem for the alien invaders.” The music evoking the images of the foreign creatures is derived from a“dissonant four-note motif based on a distorted guitar sound.”
The rising popularity of videogame music has created an outcry to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) to create a GRAMMY "Best Videogame Score" category. As a result, the Grammys leveled the playing field by recognizing videogame music in the new category Music in Visual Media; it was previously included in“Best Score Soundtrack for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.” The videogame industry continues to campaign to receive a unique category.
