New UK social gaming start-up Playdemic secures major investment

Manchester, UK – August 21, 2012 - UK-based Playdemic today announced that it has successfully completed a major funding round as it seeks to turn its vision of ‘2nd generation social gaming’ into reality. Playdemic plans to use the funding to expand its development and publishing efforts, to support the launch of at least four new games by the end of 2012, and to continue to create engaging and fun social games on new platforms including smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, the web and Facebook. One of the new investors in Playdemic is the Watson family, grandchildren of Thomas J Watson, the founder of IBM, and known internationally for their philanthropic activities and investments. Joining the Playdemic board is David Watson, best known for creating several successful global brands in the healthcare and wellbeing industries, as non-executive director.

Playdemic was founded by games entrepreneur Paul Gouge in 2010 with the aim of becoming the first ‘2nd generation’ social games company, with the mission to create the best social gaming experiences on connected devices from tablets and smartphones to connected TVs and home devices. Already, more than 10 million people are regularly playing Playdemic’s games across web, PC and mobile. Gouge has already had several notable business successes, including creating ‘Battlemail’, a Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) that worked across mobiles, set-top boxes and even in-flight entertainment systems. Gouge also founded Rockpool, a mobile games developer which created numerous hits based on major video game licenses, winning several major awards. Both businesses were acquired by Eidos in early 2007 with Paul heading up Eidos Play, Eidos’ Casual division until he left to found Playdemic.

Paul Gouge said: “Social games present an incredible opportunity for companies like Playdemic who understand that social is more than just one platform or destination. This funding not only validates where we believe we can take this business, but it gives us the vital resources to accelerate our roadmap and keep growing our community of Playdemic gamers. The future of social games has potential far beyond where we are today.”

“Social gaming has, in just a few years, become one of the most significant new entertainment industries. While the barriers to entry may have risen when it comes to gaining traction via Facebook, smart companies realise that the potential for social games is only at its very beginning. Paul and the Playdemic team are definitely a company that understands this, and that’s why we are investing in them so they can hopefully realise their potential,” added David Watson.
